Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Yesterday's DS suggestions for KDern

Here are those suggestions with links, when available. I inserted my own favorites (including the Feb/March 1969 versions) and Jim Powell's top five, from his much-cited 2006 list; that entire list is down at the end.

10/12/1968 William Tell no kybds; easier to pick out the instruments
http://www.archive.org/details/gd1968-10-12.sbd.gans.miller.owen.9385.shnf

12/29/1968 William Tell amazing guitar work on the OOnew, post drums transition
http://www.archive.org/details/gd1968-12-29.sbd.miller.80197.sbeok.flac16

2/22/1969 dhamma1 Hollywood Bowl -- jazzy and melodic
http://www.archive.org/details/gd1969-02-22.sbd.vernon.5206.shnf

2/27/1969 dhamma1 Live/Dead - probably the most famous version not at the archive. On the commercial release

3/1/1969 dhamma1 Fillmore - as powerful as 2/27 not at the archive. On the commercial release of the Fillmore shows

4/5/1969 William Tell "live dead" esque, with MotMoon-->DS segue to give you more motivation to listen to DS
http://www.archive.org/details/gd69-04-05.sbd.miller.18701.sbesok.shnf

11/8/1969 William Tell ck out the UJB, sans lyrics, within the jam, to give you more "form"
DP 16. AUD fragment at http://www.archive.org/details/gd69-11-08.weinberg.warner.26331.sbeok.flacf

2/13/1970 Dark.Starz may be the most discussed.
DP4. Not at the archive.

9/19/1970 Dark.Starz/WTell as noted by Dark Starz, go DIRECTLY to 9-19-70 for a GREAT DS, with form skip minutes 8-13 as it has a nicely structured jam, and the post StSt/NFA sequence has a beautiful CCSunflower sequence more structure inserted into the jam... http://www.archive.org/details/gd1970-09-19.sbd.reynolds.97906.flac16

4/28/1971 Cliff Hucker a dynamite Star that pretty much stays true to the theme, with a little bit of feedback mixed in...

4/24/1972 Jim Powell Dusseldorf 4/24/72: DS 25:15 SBD
Rockin' the Rhein CD - not at the archive.

9/21/1972 Jim Powell Philadelphia 9/21/72: 37:22 SBD
DP36 not at the archive. On the commercial release

11/11/1973 dhamma1 perhaps my favorite Dark Star (one of Jim Powell's top five)
not at the archive. On "Winterland 1973: The Complete Recordings"

12/6/1973 Jim Powell Cleveland 12/6/73: 43:28 SBD

That's pretty basic, shouldn't overwhelm any newbies. (haha) Did anyone mention the original single of the studio version of Dark Star? Can be found on What A Long Strange Trip It's Been, the Greatest Hits double disk. Pretty much a fade out where the jam would begin.

Wow - too many lists! Ha ha! I already have lists of a couple hundred other shows to check out. Might have to take a leave of absence from work for this...!

Thank you for taking the time to put this together!
